Why does my kitchen cabinet beneath the sink smell?
The cabinet beneath my kitchen sink and disposal smells like rotting food, but I can’t pinpoint the source of the smell. Oddly, the disposal itself does NOT smell — I stick my nose down the drain and it smells OK. But if I open the cabinet doors and kneel down, the smell of rotting food is strong… but I’ve cleaned everything out of the cabinet. I have put ice cubes, lots of citrus peel and baking soda down the disposal to clear any smell, but again, the source appears beneath the sink and not the disposal from the top side. (House is 10 years old; disposal is 3 years old.) There are no visible leaks beneath the cabinet. Two hints:1) While the disposal from the top doesn’t smell; the pipe beneath the sink does; and 2) the smell is strongest when I run the dishwasher, but it comes and goes all the time. Any thoughts on what could be causing the smell or ideas to fix?

lets see does the dishwaher have an device called an air-gap installed that is attached to the sink itself. should be a white or silver looking cap to the right or left of the sink faucet on top?? If yes— does water come out of it when the dishwasher runs?? If yes— then the pipe between the air-gap and disposal needs to been taken off and cleaned or a new one installed(7/8 hose), also unplug the disposal and where the hose from the dishwasher does into the disposal that hole needs to be cleaned out–as the food spins it gets thrown against that hole and clogs it up. take the front of the dishwasher off(bottom) should be 2 screws holding front on and ck and see if dishwasher is leaking. It’s hard to try and tell what maybe causing the smell………hope this helps maybe something has died under the cabinet/s good luck hope you find the problem let us know what you find

If you have a handiman around the house, have him, or her, turn the water off at the main shutoff in the home, and remove the pipe beneath the sink. It’s possible that that pipe smells because of a stuck piece of food in the pipe after you used the disposal system, and there is a slight leak that you didn’t see because when you checked the pipe, the leak had already dried up. If it smells like rotten food, I have a feeling that you may have disposed of some kind of meat or poultry, and even, in error, got a piece of bone mixed in with the food. DON’T EVER USE YOUR DISPOSAL FOR ANYTHING BUT VEGETABLES OR FRUIT & FRUIT RINDS, - BUT NO banana peels, celery, bones, pits, or anything that’s very fibrous in your disposal. It can clog it up where you don’t even see it. If the above doesn’t work, please call a plumber to look at it. He should find the problem in no time. Have you also tried pouring baking soda down your disposal, then slowly pouring about 2 cups of white vinigar into the drain afterward. Most stores also carry Garbage disposal cleaner in a packet. Try that, too.
