ideas on how to prevent mildew and clean it around kitchen sink?

remodeled kitchen 2 years ago and now mildew is building up on sink edge where the caulk was installed. starts out with light black spots and beginning to turn solid black color. it’s an undermount sink (white porcelen with granite top). i **** to hire someone to scrap all of the caulking out and install new caulk. afraid it’ll start all over again. thanks for your suggestions

well..sadly thats probably the best answer, and I mean honestly…caulking is cheap and you can do that yourself…the last person that did it, didn’t do a very good job, right?

First things first tho. Before you go pulling up all the caulking….take a few toothpicks and run them under the caulk edge, very carefully so you don’t break anymore of the seal. You can dip them in water and baking soda for a cleanser. If that doesn’t work…try using an old toothbrush with bleach water to kill the mildew. To keep it from happening again, make sure that every single time you splash a bit of water, that you wipe everything around the sink down with either a paper towel or wash cloth. You may want to check the screen inside the faucet…as it sounds like maybe its spraying a tad wild. Its not uncommon to pull the screens out and find tiny rocks inside either.

But, I would bet that you are just going to have to re-caulk. Very easy…all you do is pull up all the old caulk…cut the tip off the new bottle and place it in a caulking gun. ****** a normal amount next to the sink and (hehe…LICK your finger…it helps) then run your finger over the new caulk to press it into place. Quickly wipe up any accidents and allow it to dry according to the directions. It really is that simple. Good Luck

I have found that Clorox cleaner with bleach, or diluted (slightly) bleach in spray bottle, sprayed directly on mildew stains, works very well for me. Bleach kills mildew fast. Then just wipe it off with wet cleaning rag.

too much money u spend on your kitchen

it shouldnt start over bleech water or vingar water will clean it get good calking it should be alright.

spray it with a mild mix of clorox and water….wait 5 minutes while it disappears before your very eyes like magic…..wipe….repeat if necessary…….spray once a few days for prevention…..been there, done that………you do not have to remove caulking…….I made the mistake of putting it in my bathroom as it was easier than grout…..Ha ha……
