I have a smell coming from my kitchen sink plughole what’s the best way to be rid of it?
No matter how much I clean the kitchen within a few hours the smell returns …using my nose I traced it to the sink plughole.

remove the plastic trap under the sink and wash it out , there are 2 or 3 large nuts you can turn by hand , but take care not to loose the washers
Buy Mr Muscle sink and plughole unblocker, its probably some nasty stuff stuck down there and decomposing so that stuff will flush it out! Also put a kettle full of boiling water down the plughole once a week to help prevent future build up of gunk.
Before the industrial strength stuff (like bleach) — which I would try if this doesn’t help: (1) coffee grinds; or, (2) Lemon (juice or grounded up lemon).
BLEACH?? failing this, check the connection leading out to the back yard, , ure outside drain could be blocked?? URGH!!haha..lol..good luck..
Buy a bag of soda crystals from your local supermarket (cleaning aisle). A tablespoon or two sprinkled into your plughole and washed down with boiling water should help. They help de-grease too and should help stop the smell. Usually a bit cheaper than special cleaners.
get one of the drain unblockers like mr muscle that will clean any nasties that are lurking there and causing the pong. available in cleaners section of supermarket
look under the sink you will find a u shaped pipe this is called a trap this hold water to stop the smell rising up from the drains,
as this holds water it also holds food and bacteria causing the smell,
take the trap apart using the conectors and clean out he trap not in the sink or run the taps or you will get wet use a bowl,
replace trap and pour some demestos or other brand thick bleach onto drain leave for a while then use as normal.
If you have a garbage disposal , put some lemon peels in there and grind away…If you have a sepitic system vs sewer system…your septic tank may be *******. Don’t worry methane gas is harmless(not). Seriously, you might have a clogged vent in your pipes. Try the DIY or rephase your Q as a plumbing question in Yahoo Answers
Cheers
pour down thick bleach in the sink plughole and leave it that always help me get rid off that drain smell
I had that as well! It ponged of egg. Not a nice thing to go downstairs to and smell.
Use LOADS of bleach. Get a good scrubber and scrub all around the plug hole, apparently you can get the bit the water goes down off ( I have no idea what its called! ) then you can give it a really good clean. However, the smell won’t be gone forever because of all the bits of food and smelly drinks that go down the sink, so you should do it every 2/3 months.
What you are smelling is a collection of kitchen waste that has accumalated in the trap under the sink. The only way to get rid of it is to remove the trap and clean it in a bucket or bowl of water. Then throw the muck and water down the toilet. Puting bleach down is not enough to clean it properly.
Citic acid which can be bought in most local hardwares it will prob be a build up of crap in ur u bend..
2 tablespoons of baking (bicarbonate of soda ) and a small amount of clear vinegar leave for a couple of Min’s then really hot water stand well back when adding hot watter it should clear anything in the bend in sink pipe ,then before going to bed or work pour vinegar down plughole and leave for a few hours then flush with
watter it might smell for a while but only of vinegar then after an hour or so the BAD SMELL should have gone for other smells around the home take a spray bottle of any kind and add a mixture of one tablespoon off bicarb and two of white (clear )vinegar and use as an air freshener in every room or on clothes and it will refresh and smells will disappear excellent for use on carpets where the smell of pets and tobacco is pro moment also to clean your washing of the same smells put vinegar in soap powder compartment and put on wash without clothes in it cleans and refreshes machine for a longer life
Open the U-bend under the sink in case something has got stuck in it. If there’s nothing there, put it back and at night pour soda crystals and boiling water and leave overnight. In the morning boil the kettle and pour it down the drain, that should clear it.
buy a large bag of soda crystals (500g to 1Kg), available at any large supermarket or Arkwrights type store.
pour the entire contents through the plughole, leave for 30mins and then rinse away with a kettlefull of boiling water.
It works like a dream.
Buy some soda crystals from the supermarket, place them in the plug hole then pour boiling water down the sink.
This will clean it out.
If this doesn’t work, i.e. stench persists, remove the ubend section and wash it out in a bucket outside(!) that will remove offending smelling items from drain system.
PS Clean your sink regularly, and put bleach down at least every other day, this should keep all smelling good.
Once you have done this, also think before you put any old waste down the sink- e.g oil etc. as these will block it and make it smell.
Clean sinks don’t smell!!
Went through the same problem for about six months until I got a Plumber, who said its not your sink that is the trouble its the main drain outside. When he took the Grate off that then it really did pong. When that was cleared we went back to nice fresh smells. Get the Plumber to check that for you.

Bleach, lots of bleach.
