I have a major food clog in my kitchen sink and the garbage disposal is broken. Is it safe to use a plunger?

Is it safe to use a plunger on a kitchen sink or will I just cause irreversible damage to the sink and pipes somehow?

What are my other options to clearing this major food clog. I can’t clear it by hand.

Take the pipes apart. 1 tool, 5 minutes, a little mess, BY FAR the easies way to do it, especially cause you’ll need to pick out all the buggered crap from the disposal.

Don’t use a plunger, I’d say Draino, and if that doesn’t work just pull the pipes.

plunger on sink no different than plunger on toilet..you don’t ruin the pipes when you use it on the toilet, do you? have you tried Draino?

your in trouble

it is okay to plunge the kitchen sink the best way to clear the drain is to put a bucket under the drain and take it a part to clean it out.

PLUG UP ONE SIDE AND PLUNG THE OTHER SIDE, IT WILL BE FINE!!

the plunger shouldn’t hurt it. If that doesnt work go to Home Depot and rent a “snake” unhook the pipe coming out of the garbage disposal and run the snake through the pipe. Just have a bucket under it to catch any water and or food.

lol i dunno but i just got a visual of someone using a plunger in their sink and it made me laugh…if u do make sure to buy a clean one XD

get your garden hose in thru a window put it down your sink, and it should unstop it.also i found draino gel to be very good.

I’m not sure if you should use a plunger or not but you could take the garbage disposal apart.

DO NOT USE ANY DRAIN CLEANER. If you can, put a bucket under the P-Trap, and take off the P-trap. Unfortunately, if the pipes are old this can be difficult and often loosens all of the fittings under the sink causing one or more new leaks. Be Prepared to replace all of the under sink plumbing and you can put in a new garbage disposal at the same time. But basically, if you don’t know any of this already, you will either learn that you can do it or that you can’t and will be forever at the mercy local plumbers and handymen/women.

Have you ever used a plunger before??? Doesn’t take a rocket scientist. But anyone who cang et a major food clog isn’t a rocket scientist are they? Ever hear of drano clog remover? A plunger would probably work depending on whether or not you know how to use one, If all else fails you can try a plumber. When the garbage disposal is broken one should put food down the drain. Bad Idea.

You can use a plunger or a drain clean that is safe for disposals.

Is the disposal broken or just not working?

Dose it just hum when you turn it on?

No hum? There is a little reset button on the bottom of most disposals. If so push it in. Dose it work now or just hum.
Are you sure that there is electric to the disposal?

On the bottom in the middle of the disposal there is a spot that you can use a 1/4″ alen wrench to turn the disposal.

Some times it is almost impossible to move. But try to see if you can get any movement by going back & forth.

If the disposal hasn’t been working for some time it could be just jammed with stuff.

A lot of times if you get the disposal to work the force it creates wil open the drain.

Put a 5 gallon bucket under the disposal and remove it. It’s really simple to do. Once you have it loose, just drop it (gently) into the bucket, take it outside, then clean it out. It probably wouldn’t hurt to run it by the carwash and pressure wash all the grease and crap out of it. Just don’t overdo it and ruin the seals with the pressure washer.
